A new £3 million medical practice in Telford has officially opened, following the completion of the second phase of building work.
Johnson Fellows, the Birmingham-based chartered surveyors, oversaw the redevelopment of Donnington Medical Practice in Wrekin Drive, which began in July 2012.
Now, instead of having to use a cramped single-storey 1960s building that was unfit for purpose, the 13,000 registered patients have access to a modern, bright and airy facility that boasts large consulting rooms for the practice’s eight GPs, CCG treatment rooms, a minor operations suite and a pharmacy. The flexible layout means that changes in medical procedures can be accommodated.
Enhancing the entrance foyer is a mosaic depicting local history, made by members of the Patient Participation Group.
Andrew Rowson, building consultancy partner at Johnson Fellows, said the new site also benefits from a pedestrian access to Queens Road Consulting Rooms, which is also operated by Donnington Medical Practice, plus about 90 car parking spaces between both sites.
He said the near 20,000 sq ft two-storey site, which was designed principally by Andrew McPhee and achieved BREEAM Very Good status, has lots of natural light and combines traditional brickwork, synthetic render and high-spec roof coverings, as well as external doors and windows incorporating solar shading.
He said they and builders A&H Construction & Developments Plc, of Halesowen, overcame several significant challenges during the redevelopment, including the safe removal of asbestos, preserving an historic underground culvert, and ensuring the old building remained open to the public while new work went ahead on the very congested site. This resulted in significant off site parkin g which was embraced by the local community and methodist church
“The modern practice offers superb facilities for the local community and we are very pleased with how the project progressed,” said Andrew. “We are grateful to the patients and staff who had to bear with us during the works of the two-stage development but we hope they can now appreciate the modern practice.”
Bryan Henshall, business manager for Donnington Medical Practice, said: “We are thrilled with the new facility – it is fit for purpose and will enable us to offer first-class medical care in modern surroundings to our patients.”
